Skelton is likely to defend his title against Ireland's Martin Rogan

Matt Skelton won the vacant European heavyweight title with a stoppage victory over Paulo Vidoz in Milan.

The Italian quit in his corner after the ninth round as Skelton made amends for his failure to capture the WBA world title earlier this year.

The 40-year-old British fighter, who lost on points to Ruslan Chagaev in January, could now fight Martin Rogan.

Rogan defeated Audley Harrison earlier this month and immediately targeted a bout with Skelton.
