Huyton lightweight Tom Stalker has promised his performances will improve as he progresses in the European Senior Amateur Boxing Championships.

Stalker, 23, beat Montenegro's Almir Shkrijeli 10-4 in their first round meeting in Liverpool on Thursday.

"I boxed well the first few rounds and then in the third and fourth I switched off," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I'm glad to have got the first one out of the way. There's still more to come from me."

Stalker was always in command of the fight and was never in any danger of losing although a number of the shots he did land were not scored.

He acknowledged that at times he was guilty of leaning in to his opponent after throwing his shots.

"That's due to the inexperience that I've still got and I've got to go back to the gym and work on it.

"I'm good at the first phase but sometimes when I do the second phase I fall in and that's just something I've got to work on."
