Liverpool will host the largest-ever European Senior Amateur Boxing Championships in a week-long tournament from 6-15 November.

Over 250 boxers from 41 countries will descend on the city to take part in one of the amateur code's premier events.

"We've been overwhelmed with the number of entries," Liverpool city council boxing development officer Damian Ridpath told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Especially with it being so soon after the Olympic Games."

Ridpath believes fight fans on Merseyside are in for a treat once the action gets under way.

"The European Championships is an extremely tough and prestigious competition," he added. "It is said that it is harder to win the European Championships than it is to win the Olympics, simply because in the Olympic Games you have to win through Europe to qualify.

"Then you may get some of the weaker continents in there such as Asia and South America. In Europe every country has top boxers."

England will announce their team on October 30. Among those hoping to be involved is Merseyside lightweight Tom Stalker.
