Norton takes cruiserweight crown

Rob Norton won the vacant British cruiserweight title with a unanimous points victory over former heavyweight Micky Steeds.

Norton was 11 years older than Steeds, whose loss of weight to qualify for the category made his task even harder.

The older fighter was in charge for most of the bout and although Steeds landed some decent straight rights, he never did much to follow them up.

It was no surprise when Norton won it 119-108, 118-110 and 118-109 on points.

Norton's only previous attempt at the title ended in a points defeat by Mark Hobson in 2003, and he admitted it was a relief to have won the crown.

"To be fair I've waiting around a stupid amount of time. I stuck with this game when many would have given up," the 36-year-old said afterwards.

"I know it wasn't a good fight but I've only had two or three fights in as many years.

"I need to fight more often and hopefully I can make a quick defence and I'll box better, I'm sure."
