Enzo Calzaghe is confident Maccarinelli will reclaim his title |
Enzo Maccarinelli's trainer Enzo Calzaghe says the Swansea fighter is ready to win his old title back when he takes on American Jonathan Banks. Maccarinelli and Banks will battle it out for the vacant WBO cruiserweight belt in either Cardiff, Manchester or Birmingham on 27 September. And after losing the same title to David Haye in March, Calzaghe says Maccarinelli, 27, is desperate to win. "I guarantee that he will definitely be a world champion again," said Calzaghe. "When he lost to Haye, he was really down-hearted. Jonathan Banks is definitely a comeback fight and I will be surprised if he doesn't knock this guy out quite early." | 606: DEBATE |
Haye has informed the WBO he intends to vacate their cruiserweight belt to move up a division in a bid to fight heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko. IBO champion Banks is number one in the World Boxing Organisation rankings and will be paid 60% of the $450,000 purse (227,000) as the 26-year-old will come to fight in the UK. The WBO has overlooked unbeaten Russian Alexander Alekseev and awarded the man they call 'Big Macc' a shot at the vacant title. "All Maccarinelli wants is his title back as soon as possible to rekindle his career and to be what he is supposed to be - champion of the world," added Calzaghe. "It is important to me and it's important to him because he is a top-of-the-tree fighter. He deserves to be there with the top two or three in the world."
