Maccarinelli is desperate to be reunited with his old WBO belt |
Enzo Maccarinelli's promoter Frank Warren has won the purse bid for the Welshman to fight Johnathon Banks for his old WBO cruiserweight crown Maccarinelli's clash with the unbeaten American is scheduled for 27 September. The Swansea showman lost the WBO title to David Haye in their big unification clash at the O2 Arena in March. Haye has informed the WBO he intends to vacate their cruiserweight belt to move up a division and bid to fight heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko. IBO champion Banks is number one in the World Boxing Organisation rankings and will be paid 60% of the $450,000 purse (227,000) as the 26-year-old will come to fight in the UK. The WBO have overlooked unbeaten Russian Alexander Alekseev and awarded the man they call 'Big Macc' a shot at the vacant title. | 606: DEBATE |
Maccarinelli hopes his second title tilt will be staged in Cardiff but Birmingham and Manchester are also options. "I'm totally focused and determined to regain my belt," Swansea showman Maccarinelli told BBC Sport. "I can't stop thinking about the fight and I'm desperate to show that Big Macc is back." Maccarinelli was destroyed by Haye in their hugely-anticipated Battle of Britain as the Londoner knocked him out in the second round. "My defeat by Haye has been eating away at me - and I want to show everyone that is a one-off. "I hate being referred to as a former world champion, it makes my stomach turn. "I hate losing and I'll come back fitter, stronger and more hungry." Banks, a three-time American amateur champion, is unbeaten in 20 professional bouts and fights out of the world-famous Kronk Gym in Detroit.
