Khan has just signed a new long-term deal with Frank Warren

Amir Khan has appointed Miami-based Cuban Jorge Rubio as his new trainer.

The 21-year-old lightweight, unbeaten in 19 professional bouts, used Dean Powell as a stop-gap after splitting from Oliver Harrison earlier this year.

Khan went to America this month to find a new coach and chose Rubio, who has flown to Bolton to start his new role.

"I met with lots of trainers in America and had plenty of training sessions with them but I was impressed most by Jorge and his set-up," said Khan.

"More importantly, I felt comfortable working with him and his training methods will give me a new dimension.

"I am delighted Jorge is now my trainer. I look forward to working with him towards winning the world title."

As coach of the Cuban national amateur squad, he also mentored world amateur champion Mario Kindelan, who Khan beat in his last amateur bout.

"It's fantastic to be given the opportunity to work with such a natural talent like Amir and I believe that I can bring the best out in him," stated Rubio.

"I'm really impressed by what I've seen of him so far and I know that we still have a lot of work to do."

Khan recently announced a new deal with promoter Frank Warren and his next scheduled fight is against an as-yet-unnamed opponent at the Manchester Evening News Arena on 6 September.
