Cook (left) and Arthur are on the same card as Amir Khan |
Edinburgh's WBO super-featherweight king Alex Arthur will face Dagenham's Nicky Cook on 6 September at Manchester's MEN Arena. The 30-year-old Scot will be making the first defence of his belt. Arthur claimed the interim belt last July and the full title when previous holder Joan Guzman moved up a weight. The fight against former British, European and Commonwealth featherweight champion Cook, 28, will be on the same card as Amir Khan's next bout. Khan, who has announced an extension to his contract with promoter Frank Warren, will headline the bill and is due to name his opponent within the next week. | 606: DEBATE |
The Bolton boxer's last fight was a five-round stoppage of Mancunian Michael Gomez, the only fighter to have beaten Arthur. However, that contest was in 2003 and since then Arthur has won 10 fights to extend his record to 26 wins from 27 fights. In announcing the fight, Warren suggested the meeting would provide Arthur with a stern test. "I think it's a good fight for the fans," he said. "If Alex is going to get where we want him to be, these are the types of guys he's got to beat and in style. "It will be a real fans' fight and he's got to be at the top of his game. He's going off to Cyprus on Tuesday where he'll be trained by Wayne McCullough, which is good for him." Cook's sole defeat in 29 fights came by way of an 11th-round stoppage last July against Steven Luevano, that bout being for the WBO featherweight title.
