Paul McCloskey beat Manuel Garnica in his last fight |
Unbeaten Dungiven light-welterweight Paul McCloskey will take on former world champion Cesar Bazan in his next bout in Letterkenny on 29 March. McCloskey is being touted as a future world title contender and will be fancied to have the Mexican's measure.
Bazan won the WBC lightweight title in 1998 and defended the belt twice before losing against Stevie Johnston in 1999.
The 33-year-old's last world title bout was a sixth-round TKO by Jose Luis Castillo in 2001.
Bazan has lost three of his last five bouts and his 55-bout record now reads, 46 wins, nine defeats and one draw.
McCloskey's promoter Brian Peters is already suggesting that the Derryman could be matched with IBF light-welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi in the near future.
"If Paul can keep impressing in the ring I'm sure it's a fight we'll be able to make at some point," said Peters.
"Malignaggi is based out of New York with Italian heritage and obviously John Duddy has really built up a huge Irish following out there so I think a fight between Paul and Malignaggi would be a natural fight for New York."

First up though for McCloskey could be an assault on Europe.
McCloskey was at ringside in London last month to watch European champion Colin Lynes defend his title against Juho Tolppola.
"I thought he (Lynes) boxed well on the night and he impressed me to a degree but I thought he should have stopped Tolppola if I'm honest," said McCloskey.
"I feel I'm ready for a European title fight right now, all I need is the opportunity.
"Don't get me wrong, I respect Lynes in the same way that I respect any guy that I get in the ring with.
"The day you lose respect for your opponent is the day you lose yourself but I'm very confident that I can beat him and hopefully that's a fight I can get at some point this year."
McCloskey claimed a comprehensive points victory over 10 rounds in his last bout against Mexican Manuel Garnica in Limerick earlier this month.
The undercard at Letterkenny Leisure Centre will also include Neil Sinclair, welterweight Stephen Haughian and Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez.
