Unbeaten Duddy has won his opening 20 professional bouts |
Derry boxer John Duddy has promised to produce an explosive performance in his first professional fight in Ireland at Dublin's National Stadium on 14 July. Unbeaten Duddy now has top-10 rankings with both the WBA and the WBO after claiming 20 straight wins in the US.
"I'm a lot different to the guy who fought in the National Stadium as an amateur," said Duddy.
"There won't be any need for seats in the stadium because the crowd will be on their feet."
Duddy has become a big draw in New York and the Derryman was keen to point out to his loyal Big Apple fanbase that they have not seen the last of him.
"This is the right time to come home and fulfill a dream of mine by fighting as a pro in Ireland but I'll be back in New York next week to start training for this fight.
"I'm sure it won't be too long before I'm fighting there again too. I'm not saying goodbye to New York, just see you later.
"I've learned so much in the four years I've been away and I can't wait to show everyone back home what I'm capable of.
"Irish boxing is on a real high right now. Bernard Dunne has lifted the sport back home and the likes of Bernard, Steve Collins and Wayne McCullough have been an inspiration to me.
"They all served their apprenticeship in America and it convinced me that I needed to do the same."
Duddy's management have been sounded out about a contest with WBC and WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor but the Derryman said last week that he was "three or four fights behind that pedigree".
The Derryman's opponent for the 14 July contest has yet to be named.
Brian Peters, in association with Duddy's Irish Ropes management team, is promoting the National Stadium bill which will also feature unbeaten Dungiven light welterweight Paul McCloskey and Belfastman Kevin O'Hara.
