Williams regained the British heavyweight title on Friday

The 33-year-old, who regained the title by defeating Scott Gammer on Friday, is targeting a bout with European heavyweight champion Vladimir Virchis.

"I have had so much positive feedback from people who said I showed glimpses of world class," said Williams.

"My main goal is to get back to the top. I believe I can still compete with champions like Oleg Maskaev."

Williams previously fought for a world title in 2004, when he was stopped in eight rounds by Vitali Klitschko, and he destroyed a faded Mike Tyson earlier that year.

Defeat by Gammer would probably have ended his career but having got back to winning ways he believes he can get considerably better than he was against Gammer.

"I know there is a lot to work on but I went into this fight off two losses so my confidence couldn't have been that good," he said.

"Once I have got that back I believe my next performance will be 250% better."

Williams is adamant he will not be tempted to become embroiled in the seemingly endless jostle for domestic supremacy, and has ruled out a third meeting with Audley Harrison.

"I definitely do not want to get back involved in all that although I would fight Matt Skelton again if it could get me the Commonwealth title," he said.

"Now I only want to fight people who can give me something, not the other way round."

Williams has never been afraid of resurrecting his career the hard way, not least in the two low-key undercard victories he chiselled out in order to earn his momentous night against Tyson.

And he believes that is what sets him apart from the likes of Harrison, who is also planning to box on despite his recent defeat by Michael Sprott.

"I've been down so many times and I know what it takes to get back to the top," said Williams.
