Johanneson was favourite going into the fight |
Carl Johanneson retained his British super featherweight title with a six-round stoppage of stubborn challenger Femi Fehintola in Barnsley. Fehintola, 24 from Bradford, was knocked down four times before he was stopped for good one minute and 25 seconds into the round.
Although Johanneson did not have it all his own way, his single power shots proved too much for his opponent.
"I feel there is still loads of improvement in me," he said.
"Femi came to fight and made it hard but once I got over my initial nerves I felt great and when I really started flowing I stopped him.
"You have not seen anything like my full potential yet. I would like to win the Lonsdale Belt outright then go on to bigger things."
Fehintola started well but went down for the first time from a left hook to the temple in round three.
He went down again later in the round from a shot to the stomach which he complained went low.
Fehintola recovered his poised but after receiving heavy punishment in the sixth, referee Howard Foster stepped in.
Johanneson, from Leeds, first won the crown with a fourth-round stoppage of Billy Corcoran in July.
He has now won seven straight contests since getting knocked out in round one by Leva Kirakosyan in December 2004.
