Johanneson took the title vacated by Scotland's Alex Arthur |
Carl Johanneson stopped Billy Corcoran to win the vacant British super featherweight title at Bethnal Green. Johanneson's power ultimately proved too much for his opponent, who was in serious trouble when the referee called a halt after 63 seconds of round four.
Corcoran was unhappy with the decision after he was sent reeling by the 27-year-old former soldier from Leeds.
But the Wembley fighter, 25, was taking a lot of punishment and had suffered a gash over his right eye.
"I'm surprised he went toe to toe with me but that's what I like. I just took my time," said Johanneson.
"He might blame it on the referee but the referee was just doing his job."
Victory gave Johanneson the title relinquished by Scotland's Alex Arthur, who
gave it up to pursue his world title ambition.
It also added another chapter to the Johanneson's family sporting history.
His uncle Albert made nearly 200 appearances for the Elland Road club in the
1960s and 70s and was a member of Don Revie's side beaten by Liverpool in the 1965 FA Cup final.
Albert eventually died destitute in a Leeds tower block 11 years ago.
The victory was Johanneson's 24th from 26 fights and his sixth straight win
inside the distance since he was knocked out in the first round by Russian Leva Kyrakosyan in 2004.
There was also a win at York Hall for Manchester super featherweight John Murray.
He recorded a sixth-round stoppage of Billy Smith to extend his 100% professional record to 17 victories.
