Skelton up for Valuev challenge
Matt Skelton
Skelton's victory over Williams was never in doubt
Matt Skelton is targeting a clash with giant WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev after gaining revenge over Danny Williams in Cardiff on Saturday.

Skelton, 39, cruised to a unanimous decision over Williams to reclaim the Commonwealth crown and move closer to a match with the 7ft 1in Russian.

The Bedford boxer said: "Valuev is a big fellow but he is beatable.

"I'd have to train a certain way to beat him and I'm not saying I'd want to fight toe to toe with him."

Promoter Frank Warren is currently in talks with Valuev's camp with a view to landing an unlikely shot for the personable Bedford man, who only started boxing four years ago at the age of 35.

It's always very difficult when I lose but I have recovered from it before and I will come back again

Danny Williams

Skelton stayed on his toes to clinch the verdict over Williams, whose decision to come in at 20st 8lbs backfired badly as he was left looking sluggish by his opponent.

However, the 32-year-old insisted he is nowhere near ready to call time on his rollercoaster career.

Williams said: "I feel very down but I give Matt 100% credit for his performance.

"It is always very difficult when I lose but I have recovered from it before and I will come back again.

"I knew Skelton had done enough, he moved well and used his feet well and changed his tactics, and I thought he definitely won the fight.

"I expected him to go to war and with me being so heavy I was hoping for that, but he was very nimble while I felt sluggish. Although I felt fully fit I could not get my shots off."
