Promoter Frank Warren has urged Danny Williams to retire following the Brixton heavyweight's no-show for a British title clash with Matt Skelton. Williams told Warren he had flu, but it has since emerged that the 33-year-old has unspecified personal problems.
"I advised Danny to quit after he lost to Vitali Klitschko because there nowhere else to go," said Warren.
"If his head's messed up, he shouldn't be fighting. He's done well, he's made money and he should move on."
Chesterfield's English champion Mark Krence stepped in at the 11th hour and gave a good account of himself before retiring at the end of the seventh round.
And Warren says he would never put Williams on another of his cards.
"You can't have a situation where I get a phone call at nine o'clock on Friday and I'm told he's got the flu and (Williams' trainer) Jim McDonnell's telling me he's fit.
"It was unprofessional and he should retire. I don't want to be responsible for him getting back in the ring."
Skelton also condemned Williams' actions and said he would not fight him in the future.
The Bedford brawler said: "Krence took the fight at short notice and all credit to him.
"If all the fighters in the game had that courage then Danny Williams would have been here tonight.
"He may have had personal problems which he doesn't want to relate to the press but it would be an insult if I was asked to fight him again.
"If I woke up in the morning and I was under the weather I'd prefer to step in the ring and give it as much as I can. What Williams has done discredits boxing."
