Sprott beat Danny Williams last January |
Michael Sprott claimed the vacant European Union heavyweight title by clinching a split decision over Germany's Cengiz Koc in Dortmund. The 29-year-old from Reading was ahead on two cards (98-92 and 96-95), while the third judge ruled it 96-94 to Koc.
Sprott made an impact with several clear shots and did enough to inflict the first defeat on Koc in 22 fights.
"It's hard to get a points decision in Germany but I boxed well and dominated the last two rounds," he said.
"It was very close but I haven't boxed for a year.
"I sparred Koc four years ago and knew he got a good guard and also gets in big bombs.
"I tried to keep him off with my jab and when he was working, I was working with him," he added.
