Michael Hunter added the Commonwealth and European super bantamweight titles to his British crown as he beat Esham Pickering in Hartlepool on Friday. He recovered from being knocked down by left uppercuts in the opening two rounds to earn a thrilling 115-112 114-113 113-113 points win.
Hunter fought back and refused to give his more experienced opponent time to establish any rhythm.
Pickering rallied in the sixth but was on the back foot for the second half.
Hunter had his hometown fans on their feet in the ninth as Pickering wobbled, but he could not floor him.
And at the final bell, both fighters were given a standing ovation for a gutsy display.
"He's definitely got a punch but I take some beating," said Hunter.
"I just go for it, I love a tear-up. That's why I fight like that - I know I can do 12 rounds standing on my head."
