Fife fighter Kevin Anderson is in action on 30 September |
Scotland's Kevin Anderson claimed the Commonwealth welterweight crown with a hard-fought split decision over Ghana's Joshua Okine in Kirkcaldy. The 22-year-old Anderson started brightly, keeping Okine at range and landing some solid blows.
Okine had the better of the middle rounds but began to look jaded as Anderson unloaded some telling shots.
And Anderson stayed strong down the stretch, the judges favouring his work-rate over Okine's boxing skills.
With the backing of a full-house at Kirkcaldy Ice Arena, Buckhaven's Anderson came out of the blocks with intent.
And for the first three rounds, the unbeaten Anderson managed to keep Okine out of range and land some heavy shots of his own.
But Okine started to find his feet in round four, his long, looping punches finding their target as it seemed Anderson was beginning to tire.
But Anderson rattled Okine in round seven with a swift flurry of punches and Okine looked ragged in round eight as Anderson found his second wind.
The final four rounds were attritional, with both Anderson and Okine landing some hurtful shots.
And despite a strong final round from the champion, Anderson hung on to take the fight 114-115, 116-113, 115-114 on the judges' scorecards.
On the undercard, Glasgow super featherweight Craig Docherty returned to winning ways with a seventh-round stoppage of Uganda's John Mackay.
Docherty had considered retiring following defeats by European champion Boris Sinitsin and Edinburgh's Alex Arthur.
