Wayne McCullough makes his comeback against Mike Juarez |
Belfast boxer Wayne McCullough is aiming for another world title shot in 2005 - 10 years after being crowned WBC bantamweight champion. The Los Angeles-based fighter makes his comeback against American Mike Juarez in California on Thursday.
McCullough, who has not fought since losing to Scott Harrison in March 2003, believes it could be the first step towards another crack at the big time.
"I am physically a better fighter than last year," said McCullough.
"I will prove that on Thursday. I need to feel my way in and feel the atmosphere of the ring again.
"Next July it will be 10 years since I won the world title in 1995. It would be nice to win another championship a decade later."
McCullough ended up in hospital after taking a bit of a battering in the points defeat to Harrison.
But the Barcelona Olympics silver medallist said he always knew he would get back into the ring.
"I never thought about retiring, if you think about it you might as well do it," said McCullough, now 34.
"I love to fight. I am not saying I ant to fight forever and end up punch-drunk but it is in my blood.
"I have only had 30 pro fights in 11 years. That is not many."
