Calzaghe is desperate to fight more high-profile opponents |
Joe Calzaghe could be forced to defend his WBO title against a boxer he has already knocked out in one round. The Welshman will make the 15th defence of his super middleweight crown in Edinburgh on 22 October, and the WBO could insist he fights Mario Veit.
The German won an interim WBO title fight in May, and would have taken Calzaghe's crown if the champion had not decided to defend his title again.
Calzaghe wants to move up a weight, but is yet to find the right opponent.
He was due to fight Glen Johnson for his IBF light heavyweight title, but injury forced Calzaghe to pull out.
Johnson has now opted for a defence against former champion Roy Jones Jnr in September.
Calzaghe's camp have approached WBC light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver - who has said he is willing to take on the undefeated Welshman - but those negotiations have so far come to nothing.
Frank Warren, Calzaghe's promoter, told BBC Sport they want to avoid a re-match with Veit, but said the decision lies with the ruling body.
"The WBO are now making their mind up whether Joe has got to immediately fight Veit or will be allowed a different fight. We should know Tuesday next week," said Warren.
"But we don't want the Veit fight because Joe knocked him out in one round."
Calzaghe, 32, has been out of action since his seventh round win over Armenian Mger Mkrtchyan in February.
