Veit set as Calzaghe's heir
Mario Veit
Calzaghe inflicted Veit's only defeat in their title bout three years ago
Mario Veit beat Egypt's Kabary Salem to become the interim World Boxing Organisation super middleweight champion.

The German won a split decision in the fight in Dortmund on Saturday.

Current WBO champion Joe Calzaghe challenges Glengoffe Johnson for the IBF light heavyweight crown on 5 June in Manchester.

Should he win that fight and choose to stay at light heavyweight, Veit will be declared the new WBO super middleweight champion.

Calzaghe destroyed Veit within a round when he challenged for the Welshman's title three years ago.

But that is the only blemish on the German's 44-fight record, and he has won 13 times since that defeat.

WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei, a possible future opponent for Calzaghe, defeated the previously unbeaten Argentine Hugo Garay in his first defence.

He claimed a majority decision on the same bill as Veit.
