Jones would bring huge publicity to Africa's battle with Aids |
Roy Jones Jr wants to raise awareness of Aids by defending his World Boxing Association heavyweight title in Africa. The 34-year-old American beat John Ruiz in March to become only the second boxer in history to hold light-heavy and heavyweight belts.
And, in association with fund-raising organisation Africans United Against Aids Globally (AUAAG), he has reportedly opted to fight next at a still-to-be-named east African venue.
"Muhad Mohammed, the boxing promoter for Roy Jones, has given AUAAG the exclusive permission to organise the fight between Roy Jones and whoever he decides to box with in Africa," said Raulf Tiamho, AUAAG chief executive.
The budget for the bout is $40m (28m), of which $10m will go to Jones, a Kenyan boxing official said.
Only two fights of such magnitude have previously taken place in Africa, 1974's "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire and the 2001 bout between Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman in South Africa.
Tiamho said the Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan governments have 30 days to convince the AUAAG that the fight should be held in their country.
