Roy Jones Jr will keep his World Boxing Association heavyweight title and surrender his undisputed world light heavyweight title, say reports.
Jones' promoter Murad Muhammad told USA Today newspaper that the fighter has decided to keep the crown he won from John Ruiz last month.
The victory was the first time in more than a century that a former middleweight champion has won the heavyweight title.
Muhammad said Jones, 48-1 with 38 knockouts, had sent the WBA a letter informing them of his decision.
"Roy Jones Jnr would like to keep and defend his heavyweight title," said Muhammad.
The WBA insists that Jones defend the crown against top-ranked contender Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine.
But in what could become a sticking point, Jones wants to fight veteran Evander Holyfield later this year which could bring him a $10m payday.
"He's leaning towards defending the heavyweight belt against Holyfield," Muhammad told the newspaper.
Muhammad also said Jones could fight the winner of the light heavyweight contest between Montell Griffin and Antonio Tarver later this month if plans with Holyfield fall through.
