| Sunday, 29 December, 2002, 11:57 GMT Lewis 'no interest' in Tyson rematch
In an interview with BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, Steward said that despite a contractual obligation to give Tyson a rematch there is little desire from within the Lewis camp to go through with the contest. "I have no interest in it, Lennox has no interest in it, but he has to fight someone," said Steward. "They have a contract agreement that calls for [a rematch]." Steward believes that because Lewis' eighth-round knockout of Tyson in June was so comprehensive, a rematch would be hard to sell.
"No one had an expectation that it would be so one-sided." Steward's main wish for Lewis, who is scheduled to fight Tyson and the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, in 2003, is for the British man to quit boxing by the end of the year. "Lennox enjoys his boxing, seldom gets hit and is probably the greatest ring control master I have ever seen. "My dream and hope is for Lennox to finish his boxing career and not lose another fight. "I would like to see him retire at the end of 2003." |
