| Saturday, 1 June, 2002, 20:29 GMT 21:29 UK Round by round - Hatton v Magee Relive all the action as Ricky Hatton decisions Eamonn Magee in Manchester to prove he is the best junior welterweight in Britain. Click refresh for regular updates Round One: As expected, Hatton takes the lead against the southpaw Magee, but Hatton is floored within 40 seconds by a right hook. It is the first knockdown of Hatton's career. Although Hatton responds well, it is Magee's round, as his effective countering keeps Hatton honest. Round Two: Hatton is undone by a Magee burst on the ropes and is possibly more hurt than when floored. The Irishman looks composed and seems unable to miss his younger opponent. Hatton's body work is impressive but the right hook from Magee is the dominant punch. Round Three: A quieter start to this round - Hatton stays out of range and throws less punches but is more intelligent in his approach. Magee beckons Hatton to him, but the better punches are thrown by the hometown man. Round Four: Hatton sustains a cut under the right eye and begins to go to Magee's body. Referee Mickey Vann cautions Magee and his corner but with Hatton ending the round with a mark on the bridge of his nose and looks like the man on the end of a beating. Round Five: The majority of the round could have been fought in a phone booth. It is Hatton's hooks to the body against Magee's slashing uppercuts. It is Hatton's rounds but the unbeaten youngster is having a very hard night. Round Six: The first signs that Hatton's pressure is having an effect. Magee gets on his bicycle but fails to land any real punches while Hatton finds the target to body and head. Magee ends the round stationary in his own corner. Round Seven: Another Hatton round - he eludes Magee's ineffective counters while landing heavy punches to his opponent's midriff. Magee nods in a show of respect to Hatton who may now be ahead on points. Round Eight: Hatton is boxing sensibly, not getting sucked in by Magee's sorties on the ropes. The Manchester fighter lands the best punches although the round contains the least amount of scoring shots so far. Round Nine: Hatton is fighting a very cute fight, going into Magee's face and landing little flurries of shots which score if not inflict much damage. Magee is not working hard enough and has not won a round for a while. Round 10: Magee lands a sharp left, his best punch for a while, and manages to spend the entire round on his toes. Hatton seems slightly weary but he does not have to take too many punches. Round 11: Hatton regains the control of the fight and continues to land his flurries. Magee seems tired and his attempt to draw Hatton into a war is met with a turen of the head. Round 12: Hatton is rocked by a right uppercut with 30 seconds remaining and the round belongs to Magee. But Hatton, with both cuts reopened, seems the winner at the bell. although no one call tell which way boxing judges go. Hatton is awarded the verdict by two scores of 116-111 and one of 115-112. |
