The agony and ecstasy
In the sixth of her weekly journals, our Sport Academy runner describes her London Marathon training regime.

The past two weeks have been a real rollercoaster.

I've had some great high points, but I've also reached my lowest points morale-wise.

I have been really struggling with bad knee pain, preventing me from doing my long runs.

And subsequently I was behind in my training schedule.

Marathon day is only a few weeks away and I needed to seriously increase my mileage, but I honestly thought my knee would not hold out.

Patient and positive as ever, my trainer Dan assured me I could conquer this. However, this battle would be won or lost in my mind.

It was down to me - and I wasn't giving up without a fight!

I turned a corner last week, out of sheer stubbornness more than anything else. This thing would not beat me. The next day I got up at 6am and ran my 10km.

I had decided to use an open patella knee support that would stabilise my kneecap and hopefully minimise the muscle pain.

And I couldn't believe the difference!

For the first time in four weeks I ran pain-free and although it was only 10km, it was the confidence boost I needed to set my sights firmly towards the goal of completing the marathon.

Knee supports, of course, aren't the solution. I need to keep up the strength-building gym work to avoid muscle fatigue in the latter stages of running.

Sunday saw me lining up beside Zoe Salmon from Blue Peter at the start line of the Silverstone Half Marathon.

This was my first race this season - and the furthest Zoe has ever run in her life!

And here's a half marathon I ran earlier...

Stuart (Zoe's trainer) and myself were there to run alongside and support her on her biggest challenge to date.

The atmosphere was charged and we were cheered on by supporters and Blue Peter viewers alike.

I had a fantastic time, I was able to relax and really enjoy this run - we were even bopping along to S Club 7 as it boomed out over the race course!

Crossing the finish line was such a great feeling, a fantastic team effort.

If you would like to see how we got on, tune in to Blue Peter on 31 March.
