Williams holds the British U-20 100m record with a time of 11.24 |
British sprinter Jodie Williams extended her five-year winning streak to take gold in the 100m at the World Junior Championships in Canada. Williams, who won the 100m and 200m at the Youth Championships last year, clocked 11.40 seconds to triumph. "The next step is the World Seniors. This is a stepping stone, but it means a lot," said the 16-year-old, who has won all her competitive outdoor races. In the decathlon David Guest was fourth and Ashley Bryant finished 15th. Williams, coached by former British sprinter Mike McFarlane, begins her 200m campaign on Friday as she bids to emulate her Youth Championships feat. The UK junior record holder had coasted through her 100m semi-final heat in 11.59, the quickest qualifying time, and stormed to the title with another impressive run. "I needed to get a good start because I knew both Americans could come through at the end," said the girl from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. | 606: DEBATE |
"I thought that if I got off to a good start I'd be in with a good chance and that's just what I did. I knew it was going be a close race and I wasn't quite sure I could come out and perform again, so it's obviously a huge relief and the pressure has lifted a bit." She said of a winning run that is close to 150 races: "I know the day I get beaten will come eventually, but my winning streak has given me great confidence coming here and getting a medal is brilliant." In the decathlon, Guest clocked four minutes 36.13 seconds in the closing 1500m to finish just outside in the medals with 7,691 points. "I knew going into the 1500 that the Swedish guy was 20 points behind me but his PB was 15 seconds faster than mine so I was going into the race looking to consolidate really," said Guest. "Doing that lap of honour was amazing and finishing fourth in the world, it's one of the best feelings ever."
