Williams is the second Briton to win the 100m in two years |
Briton Jodie Williams sprinted to a surprise gold medal in the 100m at the IAAF World Youth Championships in the Italian town of Bressanone. The 15-year-old clocked 11.39 seconds to shock pre-race favourite Ashton Purvis from the United States. It was a fine performance considering she suffered a minor hamstring strain warming up before Wednesday's heats. The Hertfordshire star said: "It is unbelievable that I am best in my age, I was shocked when I saw my time." | 606: DEBATE |
"Gold with the world youth lead is something that I never dreamed of. I was very nervous and the four qualification events really took it out of me." Williams, who runs for the Hertford Phoenix athletics club, follows in the footsteps of compatriot Asha Philip, who won gold in the same event in Ostrava two years ago.
