Jennie Batten ready for World Junior Championships

Athletics

Stroud sprinter Jennie Batten is in confident mood as she prepares for World Junior Championships in Canada.

The 17-year-old is in the 4x100m relay squad for the first major international competition of her career.

"I've had different chances to show the selectors what I can do, I've got better and it shows through my times," Batten told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"When I was in Mannheim in Germany I got a new PB, so that shows I'm getting better going through the season."

Competing against girls up to two years older than herself and being primarily a 200m specialist Batten has only been selected for the relay.

However, having also recently won an English Schools title for the fourth year in a row she is determined to play more than just a minor role in the squad of seven.

"It all depends on each individual person's fitness, their relay skills, what they've already shown this season and what they show out there when they're training," she said.

"Also there are other people in the team who are doing individual events, and obviously they will take priority, so someone like me who's only going for the relay has a better chance."

The World Junior Athletics Championships take place in Moncton, Canada, from 19 to 25 July.
