Buck has had international success in the indoor season

A disappointing National Championships has not affected City of York athlete Richard Buck's Olympic ambitions.

Buck finished last in the 400 metres final in Birmingham on Sunday. The race was also a trial for next month's European Championships.

Buck told BBC Radio York: "It seems like the Olympics are not that far away, but we have got a good three major championships before then.

"There's still a lot of ground we can make up as an athlete for 2012."

Buck added: "Realistically the 4 x 400 team should be looking for a medal opportunity at those games.

"I think on a personal level I'm just really hoping to get my standard good enough to be in that final and if I'm in the final anything can happen.

"You can challenge for a medal and you never really know what's going to happen on the day."
