Sophie McKinna won a bronze medal in the Youth Olympics qualifying event
Norfolk teenager Sophie McKinna has qualified for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.
The 15-year-old shot-putter from Great Yarmouth threw a personal best 14.66m at the European trials in Moscow.
"Words can't describe how I feel. It's an amazing opportunity," she told BBC Radio Norfolk. "It's a great experience to compete at the highest level.
"Moscow was the first time I've competed outside England. I didn't think I'd come away with a medal."
McKinna's PB in Moscow earned her a bronze medal, but she knows she will have to up her game ahead of Singapore.
"The silver medallist threw 14.99m," she said. "And the gold was a fair way ahead with 15.20m.
"They're both achievable distances if I train hard for the next two months. I'd love to do well there and get a medal.
"All the top throwers from around the world will be there to compete and they've set it up like the full Olympics.
"There's a flame and an opening ceremony so it should be a breathtaking experience."
McKinna travels to Loughborough University for regular training with former Commonwealth shot-putt champion Geoff Capes, who has been instrumental in her success.
"When I first joined Geoff's group I was only throwing 9.5m," she added. "Now I'm over 14m. It's brilliant him being my coach because he's gone through it himself.
"He gives you pointers and tips on how competition may play out. He's really supportive of everything we do."
