Sophie McKinna has also won the 2010 Norfolk county championships |
Young Norfolk shot-putter, Sophie McKinna, has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the European Youth Olympic Trials. The 15-year-old from Bradwell near Great Yarmouth is currently the number one shot-putter in the u-17 category. She qualified for the trials in Moscow with a throw of 14.30m - the best ever by a 15-year-old in the UK. The top six throwers in the trials will go on to compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August. Mckinna has already won gold at this year's England Indoor Championships and the Southern Indoor Championships. She told BBC Radio Norfolk: "I've thrown 14.30m twice now which put me on the plane to Moscow. It's pretty special, it's nice to be recognised." Mckinna is now coached by former British and Commonwealth shot-put champion Geoff Capes. "Geoff was obviously very pleased because we both put a lot of hard work in and he was, I think, quietly confident but he was absolutely amazed and we were both ecstatic." The European Youth Olympic Trials take place in Moscow between 21 and 23 May.
