Ennis broke the UK 60 metres hurdles record in Glasgow earlier this season |
Britain's Jessica Ennis has vowed to be in the best possible shape for the pentathlon at next weekend's World Indoor Championships in Doha. Reports had suggested a foot injury would prevent the 24-year-old adding to the world heptathlon gold medal she won in Berlin last year. But Ennis said: "I've been running flat out, hurdling, jumping, doing everything and it's fine. "I'm back in full training and I don't feel like I've lost any fitness." Ennis was forced to miss her next two meetings as a precaution after straining a ligament at the Aviva International Match in Glasgow on 30 January. That was the same leg which caused her withdrawal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics when she suffered multiple stress fractures and there was concern she may have aggravated the injury. | 606: DEBATE |
Her absence from last month's world trials and then the recent British Grand Prix in Birmingham prompted speculation that the setback was more serious than first diagnosed. But Ennis remains adamant she will travel to Qatar on Tuesday not far short of 100% fitness. "The way I was performing before I had this foot niggle I was in great shape," she said. "I've only really lost high intensity training for a week and a half but I've still been training hard, so I'd say my fitness is still very high really - I'd say it's in the 90s." Ennis, who before the setback achieved eight personal bests on the indoor circuit, admitted: "It's not the preparation that I had planned. "I wanted to compete a little bit more before Doha. I wanted continuity and to train a little bit more. "I had to make some changes but I'm nearly there and happy and ready to go to Doha."
