Lewis hopes to enjoy a good season indoors in the new year |
European Under-23 sprint champion Annabelle Lewis fears that she will miss out on a place in the 2012 Olympic team because she has no funding. The 20-year-old from Hull was part of the quartet which clinched gold in the sprint relay for Great Britain. She told BBC Look North: "I have no funding so my dad has to pay for everything so it's quite difficult for him and puts a lot of stress on him." Lewis has appealed to her local council and businesses for help. Her father, Dean, said: "We're struggling to see how Hull will benefit [from the Olympics] because we haven't seen the same benefits as London. "It benefits athletics nationally but obviously we're concerned locally and we are not seeing the benefits." Lewis is heading into winter training before the start of the indoor season at the beginning of the new year. She is hoping that success in the Great Britain under-23 team will open doors to funding in 2010. She said: "I have no funding whatsoever, I have nothing at all. "Hopefully I can get some [funding] for my achievements this year. Once you're in the GB category they want you to succeed so I don't think that will be too difficult." Lewis admitted that she was unsure what the next step would be to get the grant she was looking for.
