 | He'll be one of the real favourites for the European title in 2010 Colin Jackson on David Greene |
Colin Jackson says world championship finalist David Greene can become European champion next year. Welshman Green came seventh in his 400m hurdles final on Tuesday in Berlin to cap a remarkable rise this season. Former 110m hurdles world champion and world-record holder Jackson told Friday's BBC Sport Wales TV show that Greene can be satisfied and optimistic. "On reflection, David will really believe he could and should have got a medal," Jackson told Sport Wales. "[That's] when he looks at his times and how he ran his personal best. | 606: DEBATE |
"Now, he's got the motivation to train harder and get the medal next time. "He's got a lot of motivation to get back into work this winter, because I think he'll be one of the real favourites for the European title in 2010." Green, 23, ran a personal best of 48.27 seconds in the semi-finals last Sunday, but the Llanelli athlete was unable to improve that mark in the final. He believes he will go faster again next season and will soon break the British record of 47.82 set by Kriss Akabusi in 1992. | That's what I want to be doing with the rest of my life - competing in major championships and mixing it with the big guys |
Greene said: "It was a fantastic week for me. "Racing in the world championships has made it clear to me that that's what I want to be doing with the rest of my life - competing in major championships and mixing it with the big guys. "To get seventh in the final was fantastic because my expectations were only raised after the semi-final when I ran my personal best. "And even in the final it was my third fastest time, so I can't complain. "I've learnt a lot and I won't be as nervous for the next major championships, the European. "With a year's extra training I should be able to run faster times next year and be a serious contender. "I think the British record is within my grasp and I'd never have thought that at the start of this season." *See more from Jackson and Greene on Sport Wales on BBC TWO Wales, Friday, 21 August, 2030-2100 BST
