400m Hurder Rhys Williams spent two years out injured

Wales' Rhys Williams has defied the odds to win a 400m hurdles place in the Great Britain team for next month's World Championships in Berlin.

Williams joins compatriot and Britain's top-ranked 400m hurdler David Greene despite failing to run the qualifying time ahead of selection.

Williams was sixth in the London Grand Prix on Saturday in 49.68 seconds.

Sprinter Christian Malcolm and shot putter and discuss thrower Philippa Roles are absent.

Greene finished fifth in Saturday's race in 48.88, an event won by world champion Kerron Clement.

On the eve of the race Cardiff Athletic Club's Williams admitted it was a make-or-break event in his bid for a place in the World Championships.

"It will save my season if I do well. If not it will be a total disaster and I'm not scared to say it," he had said.

Williams spent two years sidelined with injuries before returning to top-flight competition this season and has seen Swansea Harrier Greene overtake him in the British pecking order.
