400m Hurder Rhys Williams spent two years out injured |
Welsh athletics legend Colin Jackson doubts compatriot Rhys Williams will make the Great Britain team for next month's World Championships in Berlin. Williams was sixth in the London Grand Prix 400m hurdles in 49.68 seconds. Jackson said: "[Rhys] didn't do the qualifying standard of 49.2 so it looks like he won't make it to Berlin." Jackson was also disappointed in the performance of GB's top-ranked 400m hurdler, Welshman David Greene at the London Grand Prix on Saturday. Jackson said: "I'm kind of disappointed with that [Greene's effort] because when you look at what the winning time was - it was 48.88 - he's more than capable of producing that type of performance nowadays. | 606: DEBATE |
"It's always about the flavour of the race and seeing how these guys in the world run. "He's now got a taste of what it's all about and what he can expect in Berlin." On the eve of the race Cardiff Athletic Club's Williams admitted it was a make-or-break event in his bid for a place in the World Championships. "It will save my season if I do well. If not it will be a total disaster and I'm not scared to say it," he had said. Williams spent two years sidelined with injuries before returning to top-flight competition this season and has seen Swansea Harrier Greene overtake him in the British pecking order. The race was won by Trinidad and Tobago-born United States competitor Kerron Clement, the reigning world champion who eased to victory in 48.85.
