Lewis won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne
Staffordshire pole vaulter Steven Lewis is confident of a good performance at the European Indoor Championships, which start in Turin on Friday.
But Lewis, who won the British title in Sheffield in February, believes anyone in the field could win a medal.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "The gap between me and the European number one is seven centimetres, and behind me there are 10 guys who can jump 5.80m.
"It's about being lucky on the day and having everything go your way."
Lewis added: "I think I've got a good chance. I'll be really competitive, if I can jump 5.70m on both days then I could win a medal."
The 22-year-old burst onto the international scene by winning a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
A steady improvement in his performance has followed, but after failing to reach the final at the Beijing Olympics Lewis is hoping that memories of his Melbourne success can spur him on to further glory.
"It's a memory that I'll use in the future to make me better," said Lewis.
"My aim is to become more consistent and hopefully I've put all of those wobbles behind me."
