Ennis is back on the trail for glory at this year's worlds in Germany |
British heptathlete Jessica Ennis was satisfied as her comeback from injury continued with a win at the McCain Indoor City Challenge in Cardiff. The 23-year-old Commonwealth bronze medallist missed the Beijing Olympics after fracturing her right ankle. Ennis won the long jump and 60m hurdles on Saturday as she prepares for August's World Championship in Berlin. "I am back in full training now and I am able to do everything which is good," Ennis said. Ennis, who narrowly missed the bronze medal behind team-mate Kelly Sotherton at the 2007 worlds, badly damaged her ankle at the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge meeting in Gotzis last May and was unable to compete in Beijing in the summer. Her indoor season has started well and on Saturday, competing for Sheffield, Ennis won the long jump with 5.98m, the 60m hurdles in 8.25 seconds and then threw 12.99m in the shot put. | 606: DEBATE |
Ennis, the former European junior champion, and her coach Toni Minichiello are attempting to switch her take-off leg in the long jump to try to avoid future injuries. "I high jump and long jump on the same leg my stress fracture was in, the right leg, so it just takes the pressure off," said Ennis, who will continue trialling using her left one in the take-off phase. "I'm disappointed as I wanted to jump further - but that will come with practice. Ennis also felt she could have done better in the hurdles, despite winning in a time only 0.07 seconds outside her personal best. "I think I could have ran faster than that. I felt competitive," she added. Her contribution gained vital points for her club Sheffield, helping them win the ICC title for a fourth consecutive time ahead of London North and Manchester.
