Cornish youngster to miss Worlds

Katie Knowles
Knowles is still hoping to go to the Commonwealth Youth Games

Cornish runner Katie Knowles has missed the chance to run at next month's World Junior Championships after failing to get the qualifying time in the 3000m.

She claimed a bronze at the Under-20 AAA National Championships last weekend in a time of 9 minutes 49.5 seconds, well outside the 9:20 standard.

It was her last opportunity to make the mark for the World Championships.

The 18-year-old is part of a select group of young British runners being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes.

Knowles said: "I was pleased with how I ran this race and it gives me confidence knowing that I can finish strong and close gaps on people.

"I was also pleased to win a medal as that was my aim going into the event."

She is still hoping to be selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games as her personal best of 9:30 run earlier this season is five seconds inside the required mark.
