British pair impress in Germany
Chris Tomlinson
Tomlinson won the long jump in last weekend's international in Glasgow
Britain's Craig Pickering scored a brilliant 60m victory at the Sparkassen Cup meeting in Stuttgart.

After struggling in his heat, the European silver medallist blew away his rivals to win in 6.58 seconds.

Commonwealth 100m silver winner Olusoji Fasuba and America's Mike Rodgers were both two hundredths of a second behind.

Earlier, Chris Tomlinson broke his own British indoor long jump record by a centimetre with a leap of 8.18m. It bettered the mark he set in March 2004.

His world-leading jump of the year in the fifth round saw off the challenge of former Olympic silver medallist James Beckford and Marcin Starzak.

Tomlinson said: "I've had my toughest winter's training ever, where in particular I've practised my technical skills."

Pickering was also pleased with his performance in the final after only getting through as a fastest loser.

It really doesn't bother me. He's just one more person to beat

Craig Pickering on the prospect of racing Dwain Chambers

"I didn't really deserve to be in the final but I was given a second chance and I knew I had to take it," said the 21-year-old.

"That's got to have been my third or fourth fastest-ever time so I have to be happy."

Pickering now heads for next weekend's UK trials in Sheffield for the World Indoor Championships, and could find himself up against Dwain Chambers.

The former British number one, who served a two-year drugs ban, easily ran the qualifying time on Saturday in Birmingham, but UK Athletics has queried his eligibility for GB selection.

Pickering said: "It really doesn't bother me. He's just one more person to beat."
