Yelling finished fourth in Chicago in a time of 2:37:14 |
Britain's Liz Yelling put on a brave display as she defied a heatwave to finish fourth in the Chicago marathon. Ethiopian runner Berhane Adere won in two hours, 33 minutes and 49 seconds, just ahead of Romania's Adriana Pirtea with America's Kate O'Neill third.
Yelling stayed with the pace until 11 miles in a race held in temperatures of around 25 degrees and 86% humidity. Her team-mate Kathy Butler finished 10th.
In the men's race, Kenya's Patrick Ivuti was first home in 2:11:11.
Ivuti edged out Morocco's Jaouad Gharib to win by just 0.5 seconds.
