Yelling will run in the Great Women's Run this weekend |
Liz Yelling has pulled out of the GB marathon squad for the World Athletics Championships in Osaka this summer. The 32-year-old Commonwealth bronze medallist instead plans to concentrate on trying to break her personal best.
"Any major championships fetches out the best competition for sprinters but the marathon doesn't normally produce fast times," said Yelling.
Selectors will name a replacement to join Mara Yamauchi, Tracey Morris and Kathy Butler for the 2 September event.
Yelling's current best over the distance stands at two hours 30 minutes and 44 seconds.
She achieved that mark at last April's Flora London Marathon and is hopes lowering it further will give her a boost for next year's Olympics.
"I just want to run a fast marathon," said Yelling, who is continuing her training schedule as normal.
The Bedford runner's favoured choice is Chicago on 7 October but Berlin on 30 September is another option.
In the meantime, she is continuing her speed work over 10km at the BUPA Great Women's Run in Sunderland this weekend.
Yelling, who returned from a short spell training at altitude in Colorado earlier this month, was fourth in the race last year.
