Powell's time was the third-fastest in the world this year |
World-record holder Asafa Powell powered to an easy win in the 100m at the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart. Powell clocked 9.83 seconds to break his year-old meeting record by 0.06 seconds with British number one Marlon Devonish back in fifth.
Devonish, who was competing for the fourth time in 16 days, could only manage 10.18.
Mo Farah put in a strong display to finish third in his 3,000m race behind Kenya Edwin Soi and Joseph Ebuya.
Soi, runner-up a year ago, won by 0.89 seconds in 7:48.81 with Farah third in 7:49.89.
The Briton was always confident of his ability to snatch the final podium place despite trailing the pack by 20m after two laps.
Farah clinched third spot ahead of Craig Mottram, although the Australian clocked the same time.
Farah said: "It was very hot out there and I felt it would be stupid to go off too quickly.
"I knew what I was doing and they would come back. It was a tight finish and I really had to dig deep down the home straight. I got a sense of satisfaction with the finishing pace I produced."
Helen Clitheroe lowered her personal best by nearly three seconds to 9:41.59 when finishing sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase won by Kenya's Eunice Jepkorir in 9:35.03.
Ireland's Roisin McGettigan put in a superb display to finish second behind the Commonwealth record holder, with Romania's Cristina Casandra third.
British record holder Hattie Dean, who along with Clitheroe will compete in the 3000m flat on Sunday, was eighth in 9:41.86.
Wildcard Martyn Rooney was never in contention in the 400m, finishing sixth in a time of 46.25.
While the world junior bronze medallist fought gamely to stay in touch, LaShawn Merritt claimed a tight victory ahead of Canada's Tyler Christopher and fellow American Angelo Taylor in 44.58.
Joice Maduaka took sixth place over 200m in 23.36 behind surprise winner Muriel Hurtis-Houairi of France who won in 22.73.
