Liz McColgan's elite squad idea has been expanded |
Heroes of Scottishathletics' more glorious past are to spearhead its go-it-alone strategy for nurturing the nation's new talent. It this year decided to withdraw from the core group of sports overseen by the Scottish Institute of Sport.
Now Allan Wells, Liz McColgan and coach Tommy Boyle will lead specialist squads in sprint, long and middle-distance.
And Olympic 100m gold medalist Wells said: "I am entering into this with a real sense of excitement."
Scottishathletics' idea is to build on the specialist squad concept introduced by Liz McColgan last year.
The Olympic 10,000m silver medalist had established an endurance squad for young female athletes.
She said: "I'm really looking forward to expanding the group to include young male distance runners and building on the success of the first year's program and developing a particular emphasis on distance running."
Boyle has coached British internationals Tom McKean, Yvonne Murray and, more recently, Susan Scott.
Looking forward to looking after the middle-distance squad, he said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to pass on the knowledge of coaching athletes in the highest arenas of competition to a group of enthusiastic athletes and coaches."
