Morgan opts out of title defence

Nathan Morgan celebrates winning Commonwealth gold in Manchester

Britain's Nathan Morgan will not defend his long jump crown at this year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

The 27-year-old has decided instead to contest the World Indoor Championships, which begin in Russia five days before the Games open in Australia.

His agent Mark Brodie told BBC Sport: "Nathan wants to test himself against the best and they'll be at the Worlds.

"He won the Commonwealth title in Manchester which was fantastic but he wants to compete on the world stage."

Morgan claimed a surprise first senior international title when he landed 8.02m to win Commonwealth gold four years ago.

He was the only competitor to jump over the 8m mark in Manchester.

The Leicester-born athlete took the title in spite of a heel injury which kept him out of the European Championships later that summer.

This season Morgan plans to build up to this year's Europeans in Gothenburg with a solid indoor season.

The 27-year-old wants to pit himself against American duo, Olympic and World champion Dwight Phillips and reigning world indoor champion Savante Stringfellow, in Russia.

The World Indoors begin in Moscow on 10 March with the Commonwealths opening on 15 March.

Morgan will tune up for his world bid at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham on 18.
