Turnbull is back to fitness after having a series of injury problems |
Belfast athlete Gareth Turnbull has secured a place in Ireland's team for next month's European Cross Country Championships in Holland. Turnbull finished third in Sunday's Irish Intercounties Championship behind comfortable winner, Donegal athlete Gary Murray and Mark Kenneally.
Turnbull needed a top-three finish to ensure selection for the Europeans.
Paul Pollock also earned selection for the Europeans in Tilburg by finishing third in the junior men's race.
Turnbull was delighted with his performance in Sligo.
"It was good fun. Gary Murray is in absolutely magnificent form and must be in with a chance of a top-10 finish at the Europeans," said Turnbull.
"It was a good run-out. I was about 15th after the first lap but a few of the boys went off very hard and suffered for it later on.
"Rob Connolly dropped out and I managed to move through the field and I was only two or three seconds behind Mark Kenneally at the finish."
With Alistair Cragg and the in-form US-based Martin Fagan also in the European team, Turnbull reckons the Irish team will be in medal contention in Tilburg.
"Alistair Cragg will be aiming for an individual medal and with Gary (Murray) and Martin (Fagan) probably aiming for top-10 or 12 and Mark (Kenneally) and I probably looking to get inside the top-20, we have the makings of a very good team."
Jolene Byrne won the women's title with her main expected rival Maria McCambridge having a disappointing run in sixth.
Byrne finished ahead of Rosemary Ryan and Fionnuala Britton.
