800m man James McIlroy appears the only certainty for selection |
Northern Ireland's top track and field athletes will be hoping for good news later this week when the Commonwealth Games selections are confirmed. The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council decreed last year that a maximum of seven athletes would be included in the overall squad.
Six athletes have achieved the games standard but a number of those will still be sweating on selection.
800 metres runner James McIlroy appears to be the only certainty.
Zoe Brown (pole vault), Eva Massey (shot putt), Ben Houghton (javelin), Michael Allen (javelin) and Brendan McConville (decathlon) have all achieved standards set down by the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council.
Kelly Reid is the seventh ranked athlete under the controversial system used to rank Northern Ireland contenders for the games and is next in line if the council opts to pick seven using that system.
It is understood that the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation will make a case for other athletes to be included in the team.
These are believed to include Gareth Turnbull and Paul McKee.
The Commonwealth Games team is scheduled to be picked on Friday evening although it's possible that an official announcement of the squad may not be made until early next week.
