James McIlroy ran 1:44.65 to break NI 800m record |
James McIlroy smashed his own Northern Ireland 800 metres record in finishing third in a classy international field in Rieti near Rome on Sunday. The in-form McIlroy knocked 0.65 secs off his personal best in coming home in a time of 1:44.65.
The 28-year-old Larne athlete came in behind Kenyan Wilfred Bungei who won in a time of 1:43.70 with Spain's Antonio Reina in second place (1:44.18).
McIlroy set his previous NI record of 1:45.30 in Zurich two years ago.
The Italian track is obviously a favourite for McIlroy as he also set the Northern Ireland 1000m record of 2:15.57 back in September 1999.
