Tim Benjamin pulled up with cramp during the 200m final

The 23-year-old, fifth for Britain in the 400m at the World Championships in Helsinki earlier this month, withdrew after just 10 metres of the race.

"He's very disappointed because he really wanted to win this title," said Welsh national coach Phil Banning.

"But there's no lasting damage. He'll run at the IAAF Golden League final in Monte Carlo in a fortnight."

The failure to finish the race should not affect Benjamin's place in Wales' Commonwealth Games team as he has already run the qualifying time.

However, that is not the case for Iwan Thomas, who finished third in the 400m final and missed out on the qualifying time.

The 31-year-old 1998 Commonwealth and European champion, in his first major competition since an Achilles operation last November, led entering the finishing straight but faded badly and was overtaken by Andrew Steele and Dale Garland as he finished in 47.40secs.

But Thomas, still UK record-holder over 400m, is convinced the selectors should give him the chance to prove himself.

He said: "I was only able to start running a month ago. I ran two races in three hours and my body was not hurting, which is fantastic.

"I just want to finish my career on a high. I don't want to go out on what's gone on in the last couple of years. I hope the selectors do the right thing."

If Thomas is named in the 4x400m relay squad, he can elevated to the individual 400m later if his form justifies it.

Matt Elias, 400m hurdles silver medallist and 4x400m star at the last Commonwealths in Manchester, tore a hamstring which will put him out of action for at least a month.
